Soreness from stoma and bag

Hi, last year I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I had an emergency operation and had a stoma and bag fitted. All has gone well so far. But I am having a small problem and was wondering if anyone had any advice. I use a two piece bag, a baseplate and a bag, recently the skin under the baseplate keeps getting irritated and red and sore, can anyone give any advice on what to do to help this and to stop it. The nurses keep saying just wash it with water and dry it. But this doesn't seem to be helping. Can anyone help. Elian.

  • Hello Elian and welcome to Cancer Chat,

It's great to hear the operation went well, though I'm sorry to hear about the discomfort you're feeling. Regularly cleaning and moisturising of the area could ease things, but your stoma nurse can offer advice and support so do reach out to them if you haven't already. They may suggest something to help. We also have some guidance around coping with a stoma on our website.

I do hope this is useful,
