Hi, this is not something I usually do but feel I may be able to support people who are going through the journey I have been on.
Last November I had my annual well man clinic where checks were done on my Bloods and BP. Whilst I was in the surgery I asked if it was possible to have a PSA check. No problem I was told and they would include it in the blood tests already planned. A few days later however I was invited to a Doctors appointment as my PSA reading (8.3) was high for my age. I am 71 and my reading should be more more than 6.5. My doctor referred me to my local oncology dept at the hospital where I had further blood tests and an MRI scan. The results were a little concerning and was then given a biopsy. At this stage age I remember how worrying and stressful it was becoming. Waiting a couple of weeks for the results was awful and the nerves I felt on the day I was going for my biopsy results was terrifying. My results showed I had Prostrate Cancer and was told I would need a bone scan the following day to make sure it had not spread to any other area of my body. I then had to wait 2 weeks before I got the results of the scan. The worry at this stage for me and my family was awful. Many thoughts whirled around my head wondering what would I do if things were out of control. At this stage I went on the internet and looked for oncology consultants experienced in this field and made an initial appointment. My appointment date was to be the day after the results of my bone scan. I am pleased to say I received a phone call from my oncology nurse to say the bone scan was clear and my cancer was localised. This at least meant i had a clearer path forward and had a decision on radical surgery or radiotherapy. The NHS told me I would see a consultant in about 3 weeks and then appropriate treatment 100 days after. As some of my cancer was aggressive I felt I couldn’t wait that long so decided to go private hoping to get treatment ASAP. After my private consultation I decided to bite the bullet and go for a prostatectomy , the removal of the prostrate gland using Robotic Surgery. I had this done 6 days ago and I am now in the early stages of recovery. I know I have a long way to go but at this stage I just wanted to share my experience with others and offer any help and support I can give. It’s not an easy journey but it’s doable with hopefully a full recovery. My catheter comes out on Wednesday and then I’ll be out and about walking on a daily basis to maintain a good fitness. Spring and summer are on the way and I plan to enjoy it.
