prostate cancer diagnosis

Hi last week I was told I have prostate cancer.  There was an element of relief as I had been given a fully body nuclear bone scan in case the cancer had spread and thankfully it had not.

However not good news!

I have just turned 67 and now have to decide between surgery to remove the prostate or radiotherapy combined with hormone treatment. And there are side effects/ issues with both so struggling to choose. Any help from anyone would be appreciated. TonyBJ

  • Hi Tony, I was recently diagnosed with prostrate cancer (Dec24) and three weeks ago had my prostrate removed. I was also given the option of having radiotherapy or removal (RALP). I did enquire about the relatively new radiotherapy treatment where you had five sessions over a week rather than 20 sessions over four weeks but it was decided this would not be suitable as my cancer was very close to the edge of the prostrate. As a consequence, and having spoken with both surgeon and radiotherapist, I went for the op. Main reasons for me were: radiotherapy is still an option should it be needed, although all relatively low risks, surgery is less likely to effect the bowel and if I did end up with incontinence then i would sooner it be bladder than bowel. I have a meeting next week to be given the histology results. Catheter only came out last week post - my bladder seems ok and only the small occasional leak which is considerably less than I was expecting. Don’t think there is any right or wrong decision, it is what is best for you. Hope all goes well.
