Prostrate surgery waiting times?

Hi

My partner has been diagnosed with a Gleason 8 prostrate cancer, he has had bone scans and it is contained. We feel lucky it is, but I’m worried sick as the surgery he has been offered seems to be “weeks” away according to the CNS. I was wondering how long people waited from the diagnosis to surgery? I’m based in England and I appreciate all areas may have different time lines but any help or advice or reassurance would be great. Thank you for any help

  • Morning  I'm doing OK thanks  I was diagnosed  1st week December  went back to see consultant  on 18th I then was phoned couple days later and offered 21st January  or the 14th in another  hospital  that might be an option  for you  I don't no if different  areas vary in South East in kent

  • I think everyone has a slightly different journey with their cancer diagnosis and treatment.  I had a PSA test in mid-Dec, which was followed up by a second PSA test then an MRI scan and then a biopsy.

All of the above took me through to mid-Feb, where I was given my gleason score.

What's happened since is a number of different appointments to talk to different teams, ie surgeon (for prostatectomy), oncologist (for brachytherapy and external beam radiation), mental well being support (Holistic Nurses), Maggies etc..., and a couple of other appts that I can't remember.  I'm having 1 or 2 appts a week at the moment and will make a decision soon.

I couldn't fault the whole process, the attention to detail, the care given and the options.  I've had surgeons call me back in response to my various emails for additional information, as I've not only been curious about the procedures, but also the side effects, the chances of the side effects hitting me now and in the future, recovery times and after procedure care/support.  It's not an easy decision to make, but I have been told that with prostate cancer (3+4), I've got time and don't need to rush.  Also, we're off to Porto at the end of March, and my wife would kill me if we had to cancel another holiday because of my medical conditions!!

The only advice I'd give is to do plenty of research, ask lots of questions and don't force yourself to rush things - do things in your own time at a pace that suits you, whatever that might be.
