Going with the flow - stage 4 breast cancer

Hi

I'm a 66 year old woman with breast cancer and have been diagnosed with lymphatic spread and lung mets since June 23. I've been on oral chemotherapy for 18 months or so and then weekly chemo for 12 weeks, which has just finished.

I'm really well supported by a network of friends and family and live happily on my own nowadays. Usually cheerful and positive,  I'm independent and enjoy doing my own thing.

I've lived with breast cancer since first diagnosis in 1997, second in 2009 and this one nearly 2 years ago. I have 3 monthly scans and see my oncologist afterwards. I'm very close to my son and daughter, and we always see her together.

I feel really lucky that I've survived this long, seen my children grow up and have a lovely relationship with my grandchildren. I've had a satisfying career and some interesting adventures around the world. I still love travelling when I can - although I think my days of extended visits to family in New Zealand might be a stretch...

I mainly feel accepting of my diagnosis and my outlook so far isn't bleak - I try to be realistic and spend time sometimes sorting out affairs so that my children and I are happy with plans for later on, but living my life to the full (chemo permitting) is my main focus, although I do have sad periods and times when I need to rest.

I guess I'm looking to chat with people in a similar position

thanks

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Omi-66.

  • 2nds Together - Supporting Secondary Breast Cancer Patients . Website & FB page . A lovely group of women supporting each other .

  • Hi Susana, that sounds lovely! Is it based within CRUK or elsewhere?

    thanks for getting in touch

  • Yes . It’s a U.K. based group .

Also look at Penny Brohn website . A Bristol based organisation that offers loads of online support , so it doesn’t matter where you live .

  • Sorry Make2ndsCount has its own website & is on Facebook Book .

  • Susan, thanks so much - lots of options for learning,  I've always tried to keep an eye on developments  on the basis of 'know thine enemy' but with big gaps in between I've also just got on with life.

Things have changed enormously since 1997 - I found a book on a visit to US by a breast surgeon who was erudite and compassionate 'Dr Susan Love' and her books were/are very interesting reading - I'm interested in biology.

There seems to be a lot more about in terms of learning and support and this information is really helpful  - thanks again
