Hi everyone - 2 itchy moles were analysed by AI and now I need to see doctor again next Wednesday. Does this method confirm skin cancer?

Hi, I have two itchy moles that I went to see my Dr about. They referred me to Dermatology who I saw today (appointment came through in under a week). I had a skin Analytics photo taken and was told after the photos were analysed by AI that I need to go back next Wednesday to see the Dr. The nurse was really helpful telling me to get an early appointment as if the were doing a biopsy that could potentially do it on the same day. As I've been referred after having the skin analytics photo, does this method actually already confirm that I have skin cancer. I'm really really worried, if anybody has any advice on this I would really appreciate it.

  • Hi,

No, the photo doesn't confirm you have skin cancer. It shows if there is any change in the cell structure of the mole and if there is, the next step is to remove the mole for a biopsy. Only a biopsy can confirm if it's malignant & many biopsies come back negative. A mole can be benign (little or no change to the cell structure), dysplastic (aka atypical or precancerous) - this is where the cells have started to change shape but haven't yet become malignant. Or it can be malignant (melanoma).

The photos are a 'triage' system and help the consultants discharge patients who don't have to go through surgery.

It's good that you don't have too long to wait. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

Thanks for the very informative response Angie, I really appreciate it and has given me a better understanding. I have two moles, one just below my breast bone snd one near the belly button, one is raised and one is very itchy. I'm presuming they will perform biopsies in Wednesday, I will let you know how it goes. Once again thanks for your response.
