I'm new here, need advice

Hello, I'm new here. I'm not sure what to do. I'm 39. I was diagnosed with breast cancer almost 4 years ago. I have had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, I'm taking a tablet every day, have an injection every 4 weeks. We found out i have the brca gene. I have opted for ovaries and tubes removal surgery and also double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. I have been waiting a couple of years for these surgeries now. I understand that there is a waiting list but I worry that I'm going to get cancer again as I'm very high risk with the gene and having breast cancer in the past also there is family history of it. What can I do?

  • Hello Sumpter85

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through and that you've been waiting some time now for the BRCA risk-reducing surgeries that have been recommended to you.

When did you last talk with the team who are co-ordinating this for you? If it's not been for a while then I'd certainly suggest getting in touch with them and asking what is happening and explaining your concerns. Hopefully, they may be able to offer some reassurance.

You could also contact the hospital PALS team to ask for their support in getting some clarification. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

If it would help to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that things begin to move forward for you soon.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
