Hi - having virtual colonoscopy on Sunday for suspected colorectal cancer. Feeling terrified.

Hi I'm Jayne, I'm 57 and having a virtual colonoscopy on Sunday for suspected colorectal cancer. To say I'm terrified not just of the diagnosis, but the test itself also the bowel prep the day before would be a massive understatement! Any advice would be gratefully received xx

  • Hi, I’m in my late 50’s too. I had a colonoscopy 1 year ago and the process was not bad at all. The people were lovely. It’s not painful and very very slightly uncomfortable. I didn’t have any sedation and only gas/air. I listened to Billy Connolly on my phone to take my mind elsewhere during the process. It only takes about 20 minutes. Honestly the worst part about it is the thought of it and the nasty tricks your brain plays on you. I hope all goes well.

  • Yeah I have to say the anticipation was way worse than the actual procedure! The bowel prep was every bit as bad as I thought it was going to be though. Was your outcome OK or did they find something nasty?

  • They found a small tumour and I was operated on about 4 weeks later. Again the thought of it was worse. I was in hospital for about a week then off work for 8. Thankfully no chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Just gentle exercises and physio. I had a blood test about 6 months ago and all was fine. Now I have another colonoscopy and CT the week after next as a precautionary check. Again my mind is working overtime. I just wish it was all over.
