AIN3 diagnosed

57 year old female confused and scared. After polyps found in colon due to bleeding they were removed normally but one ‘different’ looking one nearer rectum had to be removed afterwards under general anaesthetic which I’ve just seen consultant for with results. Diagnosed with AIN3 and having an mri scan as a baseline for any future treatments. I was in shock, I wasn’t concentrating properly but I’ve been referred to another hospital if they want me, if not I’ll see my consultant in 12 weeks after my mri. What have I actually got? Should I be scared? I’m so confused and unsure what’s next.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat forum Brummie although I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

You can find out more anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN3) on our website, but if you have any further questions or would just like to talk this all through with someone, then do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all that they can to explain what this means and address any other queries or concerns you may have at this time.

Hopefully you will hear back from some of our members soon as well but in the meantime, we're thinking of you Brummie and sending all our support your way.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Brummie,

    Hope you’re doing well.
I was diagnosed with AIN3 in 2021. But as it is inside and further up the best option for me was to just watch and wait as most don’t progress onto cancer and I just go to the cancer hospital every 6 months for a check up, although it is annoying that no where has the equipment for an anoscopy here so if I have any changes it’s either a sigmoidoscopy or an MRI scan. How did you get on?
