Ascites and Ovarian / Bowel Cancer

Hi All,

My mum had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago, in which she was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer which had spread to the bowel. She has been on and off of different chemotherapy treatments since then. The latest scans are showing that the growth is under control, and is not spreading. Normally I would presume that this is a good sign? However, she has been in severe pain for weeks, with excessive build up and drains of ascites fluid. Generally the things I am reading around ascites are pretty dire, but the oncologists don't seem to be overly concerned?

I was wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with excessive ascites? And what the prognosis was for this? Could this have anything to do with the type of chemo she is taking (oral tablets), as she has had massive bouts of illness whilst on this. I am quite concerned because as far as i am aware, there haven't been any scans of her lungs or liver.

Please do share if you have had any similar experiences, as I really just want to get my head around the severity of this and what this could mean going forward...

Thanks.

  • Hi Harvey and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

It's great to hear the chemo is managing to keep your mum's cancer under control, and that it hasn't spread any further, although I'm sorry about the ascites she's been contending with.

We have some information about ascites on our website, but if you'd like to speak with one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable in this area so hopefully they will be able to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

Hopefully some of our members who have experience of ascites will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime, we're sending you all our support and wishing your mum all the best moving forward.

    Kind regards,
