Hello

Hello

Diagnosed 02/12 with HER2+ early stage breast cancer and first round of chemo was 11 days ago.
Very challenging because very phobic of all things medical. Also younger sister died from this 4 yrs ago.
Have found side effects a challenge but specifically eating and drinking. I simply don’t want to - not hungry or thirsty - and it’s a real chore. The regimen is TCPH. Tips on how to find an appetite would be much appreciated! TIA. xxx

  • Hi Floki,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your young sister to this disease and am sure that this may have a bearing on how you feel.

Have you asked your care team for any tips about eating? Chemo dries your system out, so you need to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. If you don't feel thirsty, keep taking small sips throughout the day. Many people lose their appetite during chemo. They can have a sore mouth or feel nauseous. There are medications for both of these problems, so mention to your care team. Your taste and smell can also change. It can help to have smaller or more frequent meals that are blander, softer and not too spicy. Try to eat nutritious meals, which will help to give you energy. Try eating some of your favourite meals.

If you are really struggling to eat, or losing weight, you can be prescribed energy drinks to keep your calorie intake up. Macmillan Cancer Support produces a booklet entitled "Eating Problems and Cancer" which you may find helpful.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you,

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
