Biopsy for tonsil cancer

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me with an estimated wait time for a tonsil biopsy. I started having problems late October and after 3 visits to my gp I got referred to a consultant on the 27th of December. He told me he wanted to check for tonsil cancer and remove my tonsil at the same time. This was three weeks ago and I’m so scared as I thought I would have had the biopsy by now. I’ve had mri scan ct scan dental X-rays neck ultrasound and even a pre opp but still no biopsy to check for cancer. I am worried I’ve been forgotten for the biopsy or is it normal for it to take some time. I’ve been back to my gp as my symptoms have got worse since the weekend but he refused to contact my consultant.

  • Hi Jayne10...

There are several options open to you..

You can contact the referral dept where you will be treated..

You can contact the relevant department at the hospital and ask to speak to the secretary of the Consultant dealing with your case.. they often work a reduced week,  often 3 or 4 days and 10- 3 p.m.  Have your hospital number to hand and any relevant information regarding to visits to G.P or hospital..

I would be contacting the practice manager of your G.P practice...if a G.P refuses to contact the consultant he should have a good reason and inform the patient of the reason...

  • Thank you for the reply. I contacted some numbers I found on my pre opp letter and I’ve been given a date today for the 28th

The gps reason for not contacting my consultant was that they are the nhs and they don’t listen to gps. I left in tears. Thanks for the advice I will contact the surgery manager.

  • Hi Jayne10..so glad you managed to get some answers and an appointment..

As for your G.P I am so angry on your behalf I assume you attend a NHS GP practice .. for a G.P to tell a patient that a Consultant does not listen to any view or referral is completely unacceptable and untrue.. the dialogue between the two is vital for diagnosis,  treatment and the well-being of the patient...

  • Yes it was an nhs gp. I don’t visit the doctor often so it really upset me and has put me off returning. It originally took me 3 appointments to get a referral in the first place. But I kept going to the doctors a I knew something wasn’t right with my mouth. But since last weekend it’s changed and much more troublesome.

fingers crossed for the 28th now.

  • Hi Jayne10, so sorry to here you've had such a worrying horrible time. And thank goodness you put something on chat and got such a sensible response from Eastendgirl, good luck with everything. I'm also in the process of dealing with tonsil issues having had all the scans biopsies and tonsil removal, I'm now due for an op to remove a lump in my neck and further work in the tonsil area. Just be prepared the tonsillectomy is painful but if it resolves the problem it's worth it.

  • You have enough to cope with at the moment but I hope someone will be able to address this on your behalf Jayne10... it is no way for any patient to be treated and certainly not the way a G.P should behave..

If you are aware of changes in the past week it may be worth contacting the hospital on Monday to update them.. hopefully an earlier appt may be available...

  • Offline in reply to pummi

Yes many people have said it’s a painful experience as an adult. Did you get adequate pain relief after the surgery?
I am sorry to hear that you are going through it. I read your post earlier and wanted to wish you all the best but as I didn’t have any answers for your questions I stayed silent sorry

  • I informed whoever I spoke too today on the phone about the changes I’ve experienced in the last

I will put in a complaint as it was bad enough I had to go three times before they even listened to my concerns about my throat. Puts me off returning now if I get any further problems.

Thank you for your help you’ve been great.

  • Jayne10...please don't let it put you off if you need to be seen... rather than a complaint I would make your concerns known, highlighting the disgraceful lack of care from the practice..

Take care everyone,  sending love and
