Breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy

Hi everyone, I have breast cancer I found a lump 10 weeks ago and after numerous tests ,  I am scheduled for a mastectomy next week, I am 68 and have had good health apart from the normal ageing aches and pains. I actually only checked myself as I had been watching Lorraine on morning tv and they were advertising the Check and Change, I think it was. Called , there was a choir singing with Marty Pellow. Love is all around! He was travelling the country in a pink bus encouraging people to check themselves, so a few days later after my shower one morning I decided to check myself snd I couldn’t believe it when I found it! I couldn’t get an appointment for 8-9 weeks for a mammogram so I decided to go private I was seen in 2 days and diagnosed within 2 hours ! My results went to the NHS and I waited for an appointment for a biopsy then waited for results and then a CT Scan which was the worst wait to see if it was anywhere else. It was clear but my lump is stage 4 so I require a mastectomy. A daunting thought but it will save my life! Then the chemotherapy afterwards will begin, I know I am one of many  that will be going through this, I t would be nice to hear from you.

  • Hi PMcCall and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

It really is amazing what the power of television can do sometimes, and I'm so glad it encouraged you to check yourself. Despite the outcome, it's good it's been found and you can start moving ahead with your treatment.

You can find out more about having a mastectomy on our website but if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to answer any questions you may have about the operation and put your mind at ease about what's to come.

We have a lot of our members on the forum who have had a breast cancer diagnosis, so hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon as well.

Do keep posting if you find it helpful PMcCall as we are here for you and will do all we can to support you on this journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
