Suem1 - diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer, which has spread. Treatment has been cancelled. Absolutely devastated

I was diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer 7 weeks ago after i had surgery to remove the tumour. They couldn't remove it all as it had spread to my oesophagus and they had to leave some on there in case they damaged the food pipe. Since then i was told that i was to be started on radiotherapy and chemotherapy on 30th December. I had a pet scan last week .

This morning i had a phone call from the doctor at the hospital to tell me they had cancelled my treatment and that the pet scan had shown that the cancer was back on my lung and they also want to do a biopsy on my oesophagus as soon as possible .i am so upset and anxious as i was told after a ct scan that the cancer had been removed and it was just showing scar tissue. This has been going on since may 23 when a routine lung scan picked up a nodule .i have been having regular scans where i was told it was nothing to worry about then the last 6 months it had grown so they decided to do a lung resection where they said they had removed 90%of the cancer . I am devastated to have had this phone call this morning .

  • Welcome to the forum Nyladog although I'm so sorry to hear your treatment has been cancelled after the PET scan showed the cancer has returned in your lung.

I can't begin to imagine how incredibly difficult and upsetting it must have been to be told this, especially on Christmas Eve, but our members are here for you Nyladog and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday (except bank holidays) between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you Nyladog and are sending all our strength and support to you at this very challenging time.
