Diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer

Hi names Gary.

Diagnosed prostrate cancer in August and after more tests was told stage 4 in September as spread to nodes and bones.
started bicalutamide and injected with decaleotyl to sort testosterone and hormone levels.
PSA was 317 in August. Down to 41 end September and 2 weeks ago down to 3.7 and so on Tuesday just gone (10th December) was meant to start 6 cycles of chemotherapy with docetaxel.
at the meeting with oncologist we asked for Christmas with family and he advised due to extra funding for the drug doralutamide we needed to start chemotherapy within 12 weeks of the decapeptyl injection so I agreed to start on the 10th. ast week I was in hospital having my bloods done for the chemo and the nurse said I clearly liked my hair as down to shoulders and I said yes and she said I will lose it all very quickly.
not what I had been told to be honest as was told it would thin but not lose.
She then said there’s a cold cap treatment to help with hair loss BUT they don’t offer it there.
this really interested me and not for vanity but because I saw my dad go very quickly downhill when he knew he was not well and this I think will happen to me. Right now I look in mirror. I feel fine no pains and so I’m good and positive. I look in mirror and no hair I know I’m sick and I don’t know how I will deal mentally.
anyway do I stopped going in on the 10th to try and be referred to another local hospital that will offer cold cap.
I had call last night from oncologist saying if I don’t start chemo by Monday 16th I won’t be offered it as it’s 12 weeks from my decapeptyl injection.
all aren’t must be within 12 weeks. Not sure why hence I’m here.

I am hearing menu reviewers about hair loss. Has anyone any experience. Will I lose all or thin ?? I don’t want to miss chemotherapy but what if I don’t have. What happens. Do I just stay on the hormone therapy until my isa raises ??

im trying to get hold of the oncologist to discuss but say this and wanted to share and see if anyone had any advice or views.

Thank you.
Gary.

  • Hello Gary

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself in and that there is a time limit to making a decision about cold-capping. It's obviously a very important issue to you and I can understand that you want to make sure that you do what is right for you.

If you use the forum search function at the top of the page to look for the term "cold cap" you will be able to read through some of the experiences shared by others who have been through this.

In terms of how much your hair will think, or fall out, it's really difficult to say. People do have different experiences and there are no guarantees either way. You might find it helpful to look through some =of the information on our website about hair loss and cancer treatment.

It's good to hear that you've been able to remain so positive up until this point. I hope that whatever decision you make about treatment, you can find the support you need to help you maintain this positive approach.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn.
I am proceeding without cold cap as the benefits far outweigh the negatives. I wanted to be in control but as an urology nurse who has been fantastic at Coventry hospital said …. Whilst your healthy now and the cancer is dormant you are in control as you made it this way but if the PSA levels rise as they have again fallen to 3.2 and the cancer effects me then I lose all control anyway.
So my chemotherapy journey starts on Christmas Eve.
I will have my bloods takes next Friday then 24th we start.
So ot will be as it will be.
I will have a read and also a few little things I’m going to try like fasting day before and see if it helps with side effects but will speak oncologist first.
    Again thank you.
