Mammogram call back

I have been asked back after a routine mammogram. It's on Thursday this week and it's so horrible not knowing. I'm trying to not think about it until Thursday but I'm scared of possibly having a biopsy. I had two a couple of years ago because they found a lesion on my thigh bone. It turned out to be fine but the biopsy was soooo painful. Will it be less so because it's going into my breast rather than my thigh bone? Thankyou

  • Hi Rosiemoo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.,

I am sorry to hear that you've had a call back following your mammogram. Was this your first mammogram? More people are called back after this one than any other. This is because there are no previous images to compare the current one to. Did they say why you were being recalled? Sometimes they mention that they have seen something suspicious, while others are because the mammogram is not as clear as it might be. Not all lumps are cancerous. It is a fact that only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. Benign cysts, fibroadenoma and natural lumpy breasts can all be mistaken for cancer. A biopsy is the only way to differentiate between these. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and a few false alarms, all of which required biopsy.

I am sorry to hear that you found your last biopsy so sore. I honestly had no bother with any of mine. They insert a local anaesthetic into the breast first, so you don't have any discomfort. You may find that the area that the biopsy is taken from feels a little tender for a while afterwards, but nothing that you can't cope with. You will probably have to wait a couple of weeks to get the results of the biopsy back.

I hope that all goes well for you on Thursday and that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Make sure you wear a snug well fitting bra for at least 24 hours. I had very little bruising and pain after biopsy and lumpectomy.

    Good luck

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thankyou very much for your message and sorry for what you've had to go through. I had my appointment today, they did 2nd mammogram, ultrasound scan and then a biopsy. You're absolutely right, it was fine and I've got no discomfort now. I have an appointment for the results next Friday. It's quite weird because as much as I'm convincing myself that it'll be nothing to worry about, I don't want to feel too positive incase it's not ok. Does that make sense?! I will let you know what happens. Thankyou soooo much for being there.

  • Hiya, thankyou for your advice, the nurse said the same. However I've had no pain or bruising

  • Hi Rosiemoo,

Thank you for the update. I am delighted to hear that your appointment went well - do I take it that this biopsy was less painful than the one on your thigh? The way you are feeling now is perfectly normal. I'm glad to hear that you only have a week to wait for your results. It's hard to know how to feel at this stage - too optimistic and the blow hits you hard if something is found. If you are pessimistic, you will be better prepared if the news is bad and have a tremendous weight lifted off your shoulders, if the news is good. Irrespective of the results, you will feel better once you know what, if anything, you are dealing with.

I shall be thinking of you on Friday and am hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
