How long is a 2 week wait?

Hi,

My FIT results came back (114) saying I should be referred on a 2ww. That was 2 weeks ago. Last week I  received a note on my GP record by a doctor asking for my case to be reviewed as " there is no record of a 2WW Colorectal/Lower GI referral made".  Today I tried to book for an appointment and have been given a phone appointment next week (3 weeks after my fit results)

My question is - is this just the normal process. Does the 2ww not necessarily mean 2 weeks or urgent?

Many thanks if anyone is able to provide me with any insight

  • Hi,

I’m going through the diagnosis process myself atm. It was 18 days from GP referral under the 2WW process to the initial consultation with the doctor (ENT department). I was referred for two urgent tests, one which is taking place tomorrow and the second (an MRI) for which I’m still awaiting the appointment.

I do think it depends on the department you’re being referred to, the types of tests/scans and the part of the country you’re in. I have read of others who seem to be moving quicker through the process than me, but others who seem to have longer waits too.

A 2WW doesn’t necessarily mean cancer (I keep telling myself that), but it’s the quickest way of being seen.

Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help!

I hope you move quickly through the process and don’t get the result that we’re all dreading.

  • Sorry, I should mention that today is day 16 since my ENT appointment, so i’m 5 weeks into this process with seemingly a few more to go!

  • Thanks for the reply Loz. It's been frustrating for me not speaking to a GP for a month and having to use the NHS app for results and to book appointments.

I hope all goes well for you tomorrow and for the future

  • I agree, the whole process is frustrating. Once you’re on the 2WW pathway, it’s like you have no one to speak to. The GP says they can’t diagnose or treat (which I understand), but then you have no one at the hospital whilst you await appointments and between them. Whilst I appreciate the individual staff are doing their best, that still doesn’t help to ease the worry and fear whilst trying to get answers.

That’s kind of you, thank you!

  • Hi it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be seen within 2 weeks but you usually at least get an appointment within the 2 weeks for not long after to be seen .

  • Hi,

I’m on the 2ww pathway for ENT. It was around 2- 3 weeks between referral from gp & having scans (almost 2 week ago), and now almost 5 weeks wait between scans & next consultation. At stage I’m at GP just says to contact specialist about results.

on the 2ww referral form from gp to specialist it mentioned it will be reviewed and timescales can change based on criteria if that helps with your question?
