Thinking of declining chemotherapy

Has anyone refused chemotherapy and just had radiotherapy and hormone treatment?

I had mastectomy then lymph node removal. Cancer in 2 out of 9 nodes. CT scan didn't detect cancer. Cancer low grade and slow growing but was large.

I have entered optima clinical trial and am awaiting results. This looks at stopping unnecessary chemotherapy.

I'm fit and healthy. 

The side effects of chemotherapy really scare me. I'm trying to not let this cloud my judgement. 

My question is what is the point of chemotherapy now? Is it just putting my body through a lot for something I may not need.

Will having radiotherapy and hormone suppressants be enough?

The long term effects of chemotherapy on me are unknown and no way of knowing if it will stop cancer.

I am obviously hoping that the Optima trial comes back and recommends radiotherapy and hormone therapy only.

Half of the people with low risk will get recommend chemotherapy and half won't,  you don't know which group you are in.

    I can see our nurses have answered some of your questions on the other discussion you made about this in their section of the forum, but hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

    If you haven't done so already, do try and talk things through with your medical team as they will be able to address your concerns and answer any other questions you may have since making this post.

    I hope you don't have to wait too long for your results and that you're able to come to a decision that's right for you.

    A very warm welcome to our forum.


    I am sorry that you find yourself in this predicament. It is one that many people before you have faced. The final decision on which way they went, varies, but they tried to work through the pros and cons of this treatment, before they decided.  This is an impossible choice for you if you are not in possession of all the facts. Many people are scared at the thought of chemo, yet the majority get through it in the end.

    The best people to advise you on this are your consultant or oncologist. Even they can't assess the benefits fully, without the result of the Optima trial. Chemo will mop up any stray cells and is usually recommended, when there is any spread to the lymph nodes. Please draw up a list of any questions you may have and talk to your care team about them. You really need all of the facts together before you commit either way.
