Diagnosed Cervical Cancer at a young age

I am new here so and not sure what to put, I recently been diagnosed with Stage 2b Cervical Cancer at the age of 35, I have a husband and 2 young children and kinda struggling to get my head around it all especially being so young and having 2 small children that obviously don’t understand and worried about them seeing me differently especially as my youngest is Autistic, and not sure regarding Chemo if I gonna lose my hair etc, I am due to start my Chemo/Radio next week and got so many emotions and also been told this will bring on early menopause, so feeling kind of isolated and the not knowing how the next few months are going to be so that’s daunting. Any advice on regarding early menopause anything I can do or how have people been dealing and coping with that ect.
Thank you x

  • Hello,

im really sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I’ve recently been through radio, chemo and brachytherapy for cervical cancer and I’m 33 so I thought I’d throw my hat in the ring to see if I can help you at all. I don’t have children so I’ll leave that bit to others.

firstly, the hair thing- I had weekly chemo for 5 weeks of cisplatin and I can confirm my hair is completely still in tact- no issue.

I also hit the menopause straight away. I didn’t know what to expect at all as I feel like at 33 you just think menopause is a future problem that you’ll read about in 20 years time. I found that all that happened was I started getting night sweats but as soon as treatment finished I went on hrt and they stopped and I genuinely feel ok- I think. Ultimately the hrt replaces the missing hormones so I think it’s doing the job so far. I’m trying not to overthink it as I keep waiting for something more to happen with menopause but I’m not sure it will. My mood seems ok, I don’t feel too crazy etc. I finished my treatment in October so I’m about 3 months on.

Get yourself a portable fan to carry round with you- I’ve found this helpful and everyone in chemo had them.

it’s all so daunting and horrible and sometimes it is tough to even accept I had cancer and went through such cancer-y treatments but it’s completely doable honestly. Just take it as it comes and if you’ve anymore questions let me know. That is, if you found me helpful. It might be that you’re having the same treatment as me- 5 weeks daily radio, weekly chemo and brachy at the end. It goes fast I promise you. It’s a whirlwind. X
