Partial or radical nephrectomy

Hi, I'm 52 yr old male and a CT just showed up an 8cm mass (which I'm told is highly likely to be cancerous) on my right kidney. I've been given a choice or partial or full radical nephrectomy and asked to consider the literature on both. It feels like an impossible choice and me and my partner are going round in circles trying to choose the best option. I wish the consultant would just tell us which is the better option.

Don't really expect anyone else to answer this for me, but might be helpful to hear from others with a similar 8cm mass with this dilemma.

Thanks in advance

  • Welcome to the forum Stuart although I'm sorry about the tricky decision you need to make.

We have some information about the two different types of nephrectomy you've been offered on our website, but if you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses they're available on 0808 800 4004, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very knowledgeable and will do all they can to answer your questions and support you whilst you figure out what surgery would be best for you.

Hopefully some of our members who have had either of these surgeries will be along soon to share their experiences and advice as well.

We're thinking of you Stuart and hope you're able to come to a decision about this soon.

    Kind regards,
