Cancer check

Hi, my sister very recently got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at 55 years old.

during a routine visit to the doctors for bloods & BP tests I asked if I could be tested for cancer. I am a 52 year old male.

the reply I got was, only if you really need it & have symptoms.

given Chris Hoy being very public about his condition & his recommendation that younger guys get checked, he is 4 years younger get than me, how can I fix this to put my mind at rest ?

  • Hi, there's no one stop cancer check and beyond routine bloods it would be necessary to have some sort of symptoms or hereditary type cancer within the family to direct them or they could put you through a lot of unnecessary tests and worry. My health anxiety has greatly increased the last few years as a number of members of my family have had cancer so I've been at the GP with every symptom going and had a number of investigations only to be given a clean bill of health.

Is there any particular cancer you are concerned about? Do you have any symptoms you might have wanted to bring up to the GP?

I know that cancer is like a bolt of lightening when it hits a family and it gets us all questioning our health.

(really sorry about your sister, it's horrible to get a stage 4 diagnosis but there's new treatments for cancer and people are living longer even with such a diagnosis)
