Mavis - Having treatment for anal cancer and it's so painful I cannot sleep

Anal cancer. Having 28 treatments have 6 more to go it’s so painful at the moment I’m so tired cannot sleep painful 6 more chemo radiation to go I’m  77 I’m afraid it’s so painful is it going to get much worse

  • Hi MIWest I am having the same treatment as you I have 13 left to go. Speak to your team at the hospital they will be able to give you something for the pain, don't suffer. I can't say if it will get worse as everyone reacts differently. Hang on in there you are so close to the finish line. Xx

  • I have anal cancer and I finished my 28 day radiotherapy treatment 2 weeks ago today. Unfortunately the side effects from it will get worse over the next 7-10 days. Mine peaked 4 days after my treatment ended and it has been absolutely horrific and painful.  Spend as much time as you can in bed without any clothing. Nobody will understand how you are feeling unless you have been through it. I was prescribed background morphine, Oramorph, paracetamol and flamazine cream. Keep on top of your meds. I have started to heal a little 7 days after my treatment ended and today it’s 14 days after and there is a huge improvement. Anything you want to ask, just let me know and I’ll be completely honest with what I experienced. You will get through this but it is so difficult. Thoughts are with you x

Hello, I am pleased to hear that you have your final treatment tomorrow, What a relief for you.I am 54, and haven’t been able to do anything really since June. Make sure that you don’t do anything, I know it’s difficult, but your body needs all your energy that you have to repair itself. I have actually felt more tired since I finished my treatment, but that could be a combination with the morphine that I’m taking too.
I haven’t been checked to see if my treatment is working, but my levels of cancer in my blood are lower, and they can see from the radiotherapy images that there has been some shrinkage.
Have you been checked yet to see how you are doing and have you got all of your medication in place for after tomorrow? Are you suffering with any side effects or are you doing ok.

I have only paracetamol but I take gabapentine for other problems as have angina so a bit cautious what I take very uncomfortable a lot of the time my nurse says I seem to have high pain threshold  but tiredness is very annoying I cannot stand mess or dirty places but am learning to ignore things my garden upset me but I cannot get out there I’m looking forward to getting proper cream that might help pain and discomfort  .Sickness is seems to be my worst nightmare but I’ve had no test to see if things have worked please god it has will tex another day thank so much for getting back to me I do appreciate it

Bless you! I was only taking the paracetamol too, but things were getting worse so I asked what else I could have as I would take paracetamol for a headache, You can have Flamazine Cream once you finish your treatment tomorrow. It has silver in it and is used for burns. I would ask if there’s any medication you can have to take away with you just in case you might need it. At least then you will have something rather than being left in pain at home. You will be able to go back out into your garden again soon and enjoy it again. For now though your recovery and healing is far more important. I am glad that it’s your last treatment tomorrow because you sound like definitely time for you to rest now. Go easy on yourself and when you feel up to it let me know how you are doing. Best wishes
