Prostate cancer - my journey so far

Hi I was diagnosed with prostate cancer August 2017, I had brachytherapy plus  hormone treatment. At the very beginning of my journey I went numb and needed help to sort my mental health out. Three years ago my PSA started to rise again, since then I've been taking another medication that has reduced my PSA. My oncologist has said my cancer is sleeping. The only thing I do now is have checkups every 8 weeks and a six monthly injection. I do my best to enjoy myself and am now living a normal life.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat Davidjohn although I'm sorry to hear what you went through when you were first diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2017. It sounds like things were very tough.

It must have been a very testing time when you found out your PSA was starting to rise again 3 years ago as well, but I'm really glad that the medication you've been taking has reduced your PSA and the cancer is now sleeping. This must have been wonderful news to receive and it's great that you're back to enjoying and living a normal life.

We have quite a few prostate cancer members within our community so hopefully some of them will stop by soon for a chat, but if there is anything you'd like to discuss with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all that they can to help.

Do keep posting if you find it helpful, as we will always be here for you Davidjohn.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • I also had a Kidney removed two and a half years ago that took time to recover from.

I would like to reassure other people that cancer isn't the death sentence it was many years ago and new treatments are coming out all the time. My journey has been over seven years now. I would like to reassure other sufferers to stay strong and get help for their mental health especially the men who don't talk about problems and bury them instead.
