HertsLass - cancerous thyroid removed 3 months ago but have been so tired and breathless since. Is this normal?

Hello. This is my first time on this forum so don't really know where to start. I had a cancerous thyroid completely removed 3 months ago but now I am so tired and breathless I feel this can't be right. I really miss the old me, doing keep fit, playing table tennis and working on an allotment. Just having a shower or making my bed wears me out. Has anybody else been through this, and do things improve?

  • Hello Hertslass

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been through surgery for thyroid cancer and that although it's been a few months since your surgery you're really struggling with fatigue and breathlessness.

It is natural to have some level of tiredness after having your thyroid removed but it sounds as if the symptoms you're experiencing at the moment are significantly impacting your daily life.

Do you have a follow-up appointment booked in the near future? Or perhaps you have contact details for a specialist cancer nurse. I'd certainly suggest speaking with the hospital team about your symptoms if you're able to as it may be that medication needs adjusting. Alternatively, you can make an appointment with your GP for some support.

If you would like to chat things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Reach out for some support and hopefully things will settle and improve for you soon Hertslass.

    Best wishes,
