  • Hi I've had one I never felt a thing ,I had sedation but I didn't even feel sedated I was wide awake the whole time  ,really weird ,but the good thing is they will most likely tell you if there's anything untoward found or not .

  • Oh wow that’s good! I’m worried about results but more worried at moment about procedure. Does that make any sense?

  • Yes of course.

I still get stressed by it all and I've had 15 colonoscopies, several with EMR procedures.

I do watch the screen too ,again sort of distracting. And always interested when they inject under polyps to raise them for easier removal. Doesnt hurt

I have sedation and pain relief but I have to say gas and air seriously helps on top of that. And this is going to sound like TMI but also lidocaine - local anesthetic on the botty. Sounds a lot but as I've so much scar tissue from previous surgeries that I need it and also their no reason to suffer if don't need to.  The polyp removal is painless tho.

Have also found chatting to one of the nurses distracting from everything helps to.They know my life story haha.

If you have a water assisted colonoscopy be prepared for a bit of water to exit when you go to the loo. With the air assisted ones be prepared to be v windy.

  • Ah Gillm thank you so much for sharing. You are wonderful! Going to ask for everything I can have to get through it! You have made me feel much more at ease. A big hug for you (hope that’s okay).

  • You're very welcome. Glad my replies helped. And a hug is always good.

Last piece of advice , remember you can be assertive , after all it's your body,  your potential discomfort..Ask away and tell them what you need.. Good luck with the procedure and of course results.

  • Hi Gillm

Hope you are getting by and feeling well.

I am struggling at the moment trying to deal with fear and anxiety. It’s only Monday and procedure not until Saturday  I never relax which doesn’t help.
Hope I’m not annoying you with my chat. Please do say if I am I won’t be offended just feel alone with it.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Pauline.

    Not at all annoying.

I could say a few clichés,  like worrying doesn't help, don't stress about things that might never happen .....

So.. as someone who can be a total stress head I can only tell you what I do. I allow myself 20 mins to go thru all the worst scenarios in my head , all the what ifs and the mess in my head. I write it down. Put the paper away and tell myself that's it . Sometimes works , sometimes not.

The next day I read my notes and if there's nothing else to add I'll still give myself 20 mins to stress. I find it gets better as time goes on. I even imagine putting all my worries and fears in a box  locking it and throwing away.

I'm not the relaxing kind either. So I distract with getting v organised,  pack my bag for hospital with flip flops - not a fan of barefeet on hospital floors  spare knickers ( not needed them yet but..)   my favorite biscuits to go with cuo of coffee in recovery,

I plan my meal for when I'm home  usually a slice of toast straight away,  a nap and them chicken with potatoes and nice mild sauce.

    I'm sort of OK.

Having a few bowel issues atm. Nothing new but frustrating and uncomfortable. But Hay ho I'm alive and the sun is shinning here.

Don't know if any of this helps.

    Best wishes

    G.

  • Hey Gillm

Thank you for some sound advice. I am going to do that this week. Sorry to hear you’re having some problems and I won’t do the cliches because I’m not experiencing your pain. Thinking of you tho! Yes it’s been a nice day here but I have been working. Going to walk my dog soon which helps sort my head out for the time we are out. Thank you for being so kind and patient with me. Please know it is appreciated and helpful. By the way my tears have dried up for the moment so that is good. I hope I’m not coming across as over familiar just feel you understand and can relate to my being a wuss!
    Thank you

  • All good with me Pauline,  talking to others even if strangers helps sometimes.

I've had cancer twice now, 9 yrs ago  bowel and radical hysterectomy for uterine cancer April this year.

I'm all clear as they say and feel ' lucky' to have dodged a bullet twice,  surgeries both curative,  no chemo.

I must admit to not stressing much these days altho I do remember those dark places all too well.

  • Hi Gillm

There’s me feeling sorry for myself and you who have been through so  much. So pleased you ‘dodged’ the two bullets. You are right it helps to talk and more so when you can be yourself. Feeling blessed to talk with you. Thank you

  • Don't be daft. All health issues and worries are relative only to you, comparisons are pointless cos it's about what you feel right now and how it affects you.  I only tell people bout the cancer to I suppose shed a

' positive ' take in so much that it's not always as bad as people think.

People often say we'll you don't look like you've had cancer and I'm like well that's good but I did twice lol.

Guess my takeaway from this is your EMR procedure won't be pleasant but not as bad as your fears. You'll prob know what the polyp is straight after when you're discharged. If it's a benign one or poss precancer or worse then it's gone.  I've had about 25 precancerous ones removed to date and even more benign ones. These days I wave them goodbye in their little specimen jars.

Do let me know how it goes on Saturday.

  • Thank you

So nice to have you as a friend. I will start collecting nice jars for just in case  You ate so wise and thoughtful thank you. I will keep you updated but also look forward to chats getting to know more about each other … only if that’s okay.!
