Will I be Asleep or Awake for my Craniotomy? Any thoughts/insight greatly appreciated

Will I be given the option to be awake or asleep for my Craniotomy? I am not so bothered either way just the end result. If anyone has any thoughts they would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes to you all.

  • Hello CharliesC,

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck for your surgery. Our website has detailed information on surgery for brain tumours and you will see there a section on the craniotomy.  It mentions in there that "you usually have a craniotomy under general anaesthetic" but the type of craniotomy you are having will depend on where your tumour is located as our information page also mentions in some cases the 'awake craniotomy' where you are kept awake for part of the surgery. This has been previously discussed too in our forum as you will see in  's thread which you are welcome to respond to if you wish. I think just so you can be prepared psychologically as to what to expect, it would be a good idea to find out beforehand whether you will have a general anaesthetic and if this will be for the whole duration of the procedure or not and only your medical team will be able to answer this question accurately as they will have all the details about your tumour and what is required. I would suggest you give your specialist/medical team at the hospital a call, or I am sure the surgeon's secretary for example will be able to find this information for you.

For support and information, you can also call our information nurses on freephone 0808 800 4040, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

I hope that everything goes well with the procedure - have you already got a date for the operation?

Best wishes and best of luck for the craniotomy,
