Hi Guy's, New experience. I'm 68 never smoked, always kept fit, been in RN, MN, & 30 yrs in Fire & Rescue; now retired.

Had lower lobe removed  three weeks ago today September 10 th. Recovering well...I think!

The NHS have been brilliant!

My wife still works for the NHS as a Cardiac Sister, last month she completed 50yrs for the NHS; she is "Solid Gold".

Be glad to communicate with others that know a great deal more than I do about " Lung Cancer", perhaps offer some advice to a "Newboy" on the block.

    I'm sorry to hear you were diagnosed with lung cancer, but I'm really glad the NHS have looked after you during your surgery and that your recovery is going well.

    I'm sure some of our lung cancer members will share their stories and advice with you soon but if there is anything else that you'd like to speak to one of our cancer nurses about whilst you wait, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to address any other questions or concerns you may have about your diagnosis or recovery at this time.

    Hi, I’m Alan. I’m due to go for my operation to have part of my left lung removed on Monday. I’m a bit apprehensive about it but not scared. How long did it take before you started to feel better?

    Morning Tom, I'm Lawrence, live in Kent. Had a third of my right lung removed on Sept 10th, by robot,

    Excellent staff, for aftercare treatment. Good drug regime for pain control. Excellent Advice.

    It's tough, of course. Be aware that some of the drugs, ie: Morphine, may make you sick, as it did with me, something to watch for.

    I largely have taken Paracetamol, & Ibuprophen, since being discharged. I am 67, never smoked, "X" fire service, always kept fit; I got out of the hospital 48hrs after the operation. Glad to get home.

    Each week more manageable. Breathing good. Ache/Pain still there but manageable.

    Keep in touch, if I can assist with any queries/concerns be glad to help.

    One thing, before you go in, put together a comprehensive kit for washing, any particular day to day things you usually use for your comfort; it all helps!

    Thanks for that Lawrence. I think I’m having it done by Visual Assisted Thoracoscopy, similar to you.

    i feel better knowing somebody went through the process and feels good about it.

    Opioids like morphine can have funny effects on your system but I suppose they are essential to keep pain under control.

    No Problem Tom, good luck. Hopefully you'll "Esape" in a couple of days of your Op.

    I keep in touch with one of the guys who lives in Tonbridge, who had a three & a half hour Op. Mine was only 90 minutes, using the "Da Vinci" robot, driven of course by the surgeon.

    Another thing, might help. The coughing following my Op has been, on occasion..."a right bustard!"

    The staff, do say..." Oh we encourage coughing!"

    All I can say is that Advice is from people who've never had part of their lung removed!

    I took "Strepsils" in with me, which night & day have helped. And a "Tickly Cough linctus".

    Both of which helped calm the throat & the coughing.
