Struggling on Tamoxifen

Hi All,

I am struggling on Tamoxifen.  I am 50 and still pre full menopause.  I had a bilateral mastectomy.  HER2 Neg, EST/PRO Positive 7 and grade 1 and 2.  Lymph nodes negative. I am to take tamoxifen for 5 years.  I used to get hormonal migraines when I had my period.  Had an endometrial ablation (no lining of womb) so stopped periods years ago and to be honest my monthly migraines subsided and became more manageable. I ended up having 3 killer migraines that lasted 5 days each in a month.  the last one nearly 2 weeks. including trip to A&E, put on a drip, morfine and brain scan to check not cancer in my head.  thankfully that scan was clear.  i came off tamoxifen for 2 months and felt great. Advised to see neurologist who put me on propranalol.  was fine for a while.  have been on propranalol for a 3 months now and been back on tamoxifen (different brand) for 7-8 weeks.  My hair is thining brushes out daily and through the day.  I feel so sick all the time, tired, light headed, nauseas.  I can cope with the sweats and the joint pain but I can;t see how I can hold down a job feeling so sick and tired all the time.  i lost my job during treatment, but I am in interviews for a job id really like.  i am going to the consultant to see if i need to stay on tamoxifen and if there are any other options.

Has anyone else suffered migraines with tamoxifen? What have you found helpful? anyone else on propranalol also for migraines? and anyone else feeling so sick and tired.   I can;t be bothered doing anythign..

I'm so sorry to hear about the struggles that you're experiencing with taking Tamoxifen. It sounds like it's really impacting the quality of your daily life. It's good to know that you already have an appointment with the Consultant to discuss these issues and explore any other options that may be available to you.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nurses before seeing the Consultant. It may be that they can offer some advice and support as well as perhaps give you some additional questions that you might want to ask the consultant. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I really hope that you're able to find a way forward that improves the situation for you. I also hope that your job interviews are successful.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
