Prostratepatient - has anyone my age, 80, had radiotherapy? How did you cope?

I have been diagnosed with Prostrate cancer, i am 80 years old, have hypertension and on medication for that for many years, two days ago i had an appointment with the Oncologist and Radiographer,

they spoke of many things particularly possible side effects of the treatment and have now left it for me to decide whether I wish to continue with this treatment (Radiotherapy) I am already having Hormone therapy and they will call me in a couple of weeks for my decision.

To this end I would like to ask if there is anyone who is of a similar age to myself who has had radiotherapy how they coped with it and any problems they may have had and do they  feel better for having this treatment, as i have

to make a decision within the next two weeks, any comments would be most welcome

  • Hello ProstatePatient

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that you now find yourself facing the choice of treatment options. It's understandable that you want to make sure you have as much information as you can to hand before making your decision.

I know that we have lots of men of various ages and some with additional health concerns here in the Cancer Chat community who have undergone radiotherapy. Hopefully, some of them will reply to your post to share their experiences with you.

In the meantime, I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can as well as help you think about questions that you might want to ask. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Whatever choice you make, I wish you well.

    Best wishes,
