Rectal cancer

Hi all, I turned 60 this year, been nursing for 42 years, mostly MacMillan.

Went to the GP last year and was diagnosed with a haemorrhoid, no FIT test done.  I am now 2 weeks post op from AP resection and stoma. Just had the call that 18 out of 19 lymph nodes r4emoved were cancerous. I’m due to start 8 cycles of chemo and I’m scared stiff. I feel so well!

The last 24 months both my parents and my son died. I now have to break this to my other 2 adults children, both nurses.  Financially self employed, no idea what to do really! Currently thinking shove the chemo!!

  • Hello AlyGG

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that following your recent surgery you've now been told that chemotherapy is recommended. I know that many of our members will understand the fear that this news can bring.

It's good to hear that you're feeling so physically well at the moment. If you decide to go ahead with the recommended treatment this will undoubtedly stand you in good stead.

Telling loved ones that you have a cancer diagnosis, and what the treatment may involve, is never an easy task. Particularly when you have had some close losses within the last few years. It's understandable that you want to try and protect your children. Approach the conversation however you feel comfortable AlyGG and I'm sure that your children will be there to support you in any way that they can.

In terms of finances, I'd suggest getting in touch with the Macmillan benefits and financial support team. They will be best placed to give you some information and advice about any benefits that you may be able to claim.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that if you decide to go forward with the chemotherapy things progress well for you. Don't be afraid to reach out to your children, family, and friends for support. And please know that the Cancer Chat community is here to listen and offer any advice and support that we can as well.

    Sending my best wishes,
    Jenn
