Risk reducing breast surgery

Hi all was just wondering if anyone out there has had a double mastectomy to prevent getting cancer again I had breast cancer in 2002 I had a lump ectomy and lymph nodes removed . My mum got breast cancer in 2013 and had a mastectomy mum is now 80 and just been diagnosed with breast cancer in her other breast I'm now thinking of having a double mastectomy to prevent it coming back again if anyone has any advice would love to hear from you

  • Hi Toyota and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear both you and your mum have been affected by breast cancer, and that your mum's cancer has recently come back in her other breast. This must be a very difficult time for you both.

Hopefully some of our members who have had a double mastectomy will share their thoughts and advice with you soon, but if you'd like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to work through the pros and cons of having this surgery so you can figure out what's best for you.

I'm not sure if you have discussed this with your GP or medical team yet, but it would definitely be worth talking things through with them when you get a chance as well.

I hope you're able to come to a decision about this soon and wishing your mum all the best as she embarks on this journey once more.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
