Newly diagnosed with Cancer of the Ampulla of Vater

Hi, my name for the purpose of this posting is NogBad.  Following a bout of Jaundice in February and a subsequent Endoscopy (camera down the throat), a biopsy taken at the time has shown evidence of cancer of the ampulla of vater which is apparently very rare. As I am 80 years of age (normal life expectancy 79 and 7 months having lived in West Yorkshire all my life), I have already declined a Whipple operation on the grounds that I don't think I am strong enough to survive the operation (up to 10% of patients die on the operating table), so a meeting was arranged in June with an expert in chemotherapy. Unfortunately and in the meantime, I became aware of a significant shortage of breath and after entering hospital for tests, I have recently been given 2 iron fusion drips, one week apart. As these have clashed with my chemotherapy meeting, this has now been re-sheduled for later in July.  I wonder if anyone who may read this posting has any knowledge or experience of Cancer of the Ampulla of Vater as I would like to know what treatment may have been recommended? I also wonder if anyone has elected to take a 'watch & wait' stance and to have no treatment for the time being - for example, I have had Prostate Cancer for 16 years but have not yet had any medicine, pills or even surgery and (on a watch & wait basis), I am informed that I will eventually die with it, but not because of it. Any help, advice or comments would be most welcome, Regards, NogBad.

  • Hello NogBad

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of ampullary cancer. I hope that since your iron infusions, you're feeling better and that you will now be able to attend your chemotherapy meeting later this month.

It's understandable that you want to ensure that you have as much information as possible ahead of this meeting so that you can make the right decision for you regarding any suggested treatment options.

I've had a look through the forum and there are quite a few posts where members have mentioned "Ampullary cancer" although unfortunately not recently. If you'd like to read through some of these posts you can locate them by using the search function at the top of the page.

You might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses ahead of your appointment with the oncologist. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about any questions that you may want to ask the specialist. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your appointment later this month goes well and that whatever decisions you make, you're well supported by the health professionals and those around you.

    Sending you my best wishes,
    Jenn
