Advice please

Hi, new here and after some help please

My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on Easter Sunday, since then it has been about getting him jaundice free, after 5 weeks in hospital he came home, finally thought we were getting somewhere, he had his 1st oncology appt only to be told he wasn't fit enough for chemo and a follow up appt would be given in 4-6 weeks. He decided to get a 2nd opinion, which he's had this week, they said chemo was a great option. The 4-6 week follow up is 10th July but we have been told from then there is a 2-3 week wait for chemo. I'm really struggling as to why we have to wait until 10th July for him to be put on the waiting list. Without chemo they have suggested life expectancy of 4 months but to wait for chemo is nearly half of that time gone

Has anyone else been in this situation and could offer any advice please

  • Hello KLAIREY,

A warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear your dad has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It's good he got a second opinion and that he has now been told chemotherapy is a great option for him. I can understand why the fact that he is having to wait all this time to start chemotherapy is making you nervous. Luckily it's not too long now until the follow up appointment and perhaps you could discuss your concerns there that you would have to wait another 2-3 weeks from there. Make sure you tell them how you are feeling about this and ask if there is any chance he could start treatment sooner. It might not be possible and it may be that this is standard procedure in cases like his, but it's definitely worth asking nonetheless at the follow up appointment.

If you would like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer questions you might have on this or point you in the right direction.

I hope that you will hear from others who have been in a similar situation before and that they will be along shortly with their thoughts based on their personal experiences.

I sincerely hope your dad can start treatment soon and that chemotherapy will be effective and work well for him.

Best wishes to you and your dad,
