Feeling lonely and forgotten after finishing breast cancer treatment

I recently finished treatment for breast cancer and am recovering from a double mastectomy.  I feel lonely and teary, almost forgotten.  Everyone thinks that because treatment is over and there's no more cancer that I am fine, but I don't feel fine.  What should I do?

  • Hello BRYS10.  Sorry to hear you are feeling this way.  I think that very often, people simply don't understand that cancer takes a huge emotional toll on a person, and you don't simply spring back to 'normality' just because the treatment is finished.  Also, you are grieving the loss of part of your body, and again, this is absolutely normal.  Yes, you are glad to be alive, but the fact remains that it is extremely traumatic to go through a double mastectomy.  Have you spoken to your GP about how you are feeling? Or perhaps your cancer nurse?  Hopefully they will be able to help you.  Good luck, xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply.  I really appreciate it .  It's so true that I'm grieving for losing what has been removed.  I'm still having problems with the implants too and am feeling quite uncomfortable. I'm talking to my doctor this week to share my feelings. I'm considering asking for antidepressants, a low dose.  I'll also mention it to my nurse.  Thank you once again x
