Hello Im Keith

Hello - My name is Keith. I am 66 a year old male.

I am having a very anxious time this weekend waiting for a scan.

I have felt some changes this past few weeks and the doctor sent me to xray for my chest and lungs. This came back all clear and no concerns.

I went back to doctor as I felt I was getting worse, more breathless, a little blood in sputum, and coughing from deeper down. My doctor gave me urgent referral to the 2 week rule.

I received a CT Scan 5 days later, then unexpectedly a Gallium Doctate Pet/CT scan a week later. Strangely I also got an appointment before the scan for a visit to the lung respiratory clinic for 3 days after the pet scan.

I am now fearing the worst, seems strange to have that appointment booked before the Pet/CT scan.

The hardest part is sitting here all alone with no one for support!

My scan is on Monday and the follow up at respiratory 3 days later, makes me think that cancer is already known and they are looking to see if it has spread or not. The scan is for NET'S.

As I say sitting here waiting all alone is very hard, not knowing how it all works etc.

  • Hello Keith

Welcome to Cancer Chat although I'm sorry to hear about the health problems that you've been experiencing and that you're now waiting for scans. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about what may be causing your symptoms and why all these appointments are being booked for you.

Do you have any family or friends around that can help support you through this Keith? It's understandable that sometimes we don't want to bother or to worry other people but if you have people that you can reach out to then do give them a call.

I'm sure that some of the community members will reply to your post soon but in the meantime, I wanted to give you this link to some information about how to cope with waiting for news which you may find helpful. We have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research UK that you can call to talk with. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that wherever you are today Keith the sun is shining. Keeping busy certainly helps with the wait so perhaps a walk in the sun and fresh air or some time in the garden can help to distract you for a few hours.

In the meantime, we're here to listen and offer any support we can. Do let us know how you get on next week.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Thank you Jenn. Sadly I have nobody for support. Have lived on my own since I cared for my mother. But thanks again for the reply.

  • Hello Keith,

Sorry about what you are going through at the moment.

I assume that the CT scan that you had was done on the chest area, in which case there must've been something untoward highlighted - hence the appointment for the NETS (neuroendocrine tumors) PET/CT scan. This will enable the medics to see IF indeed you do have an endocrine tumor on the lung. At the moment they're not sure.

Given that you've been having problems with breathing, seeing a respiratory consultant would be helpful, irrespective of the result of the NETS scan.

You must be feeling very anxious and it's awful not being able to talk about how you feel with someone.

  • Hello Sharza

Thanks for the reply. Yes the CT was for chest area. I had cough and breathlessness but it was previously thought it was Reflux. But I felt my symptoms changed a lot( sharp pain in throat when taking deep breath, and cough seemed to come from deeper)so I reported it to my GP.

Im trying not to read about NET'S online as they scare me too much. I can only wait for now, its just that the wait was alone. But I have been keeping busier tonight and that helps.

  • I understand, especially the bit about going online.

Am pleased that you kept yourself busier last night.

It's good that your scan is tomorrow and that you'll be attending the lung respiratory clinic later this week. So you won't have too long to wait. It's the waiting that's so hard.

As Jenn said, do let us know how you get on this week.

  • I had my scan which was pretty straightforward. At the lung clinic I was told I had a carcinoma(which had been missed 3 times by chest xray radiologists).

He said I have had this for at least a couple of years, so it is impossible that it is small cell as I would be dead without treatment by now. He seemed very certain, almost unworried, about this, saying that it was very treatable.

So I have a few appointments to come, and now have some support with my own cancer nurse.

Thanks to all that have listened.

  • Sorry, Keith that you've got a carcinoma. Not the result you wanted though.

It's encouraging that you were told that's it's very treatable.

It's helpful having support from you own cancer nurse as this can be a scary and lonely time.

Hope the following appointments go well and that everything goes well for you in the future.

    Best wishes Sharon

  • Thank you Sharon, and thanks for taking the time to help me through.

  • Keith - you're very welcome.

Do keep in touch if you would like to.

    Best wishes,

    Sharon

  • Hello Keith,
