Single or double mastectomy

I've been  told I need a single mastectomy and having reconstruction from my abdomen.  However, should I wait for the genetic screening  (BRCA) results to see whether it is recommended I have a double?

( even tho there is cancer in one breast only)?

Or should I go ahead with the single now and just have regular mammograms?

  • Hi Gillyboop and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

Although no-one here can tell you what to do, I'm sure some of our members who have had either a single or double mastectomy will be along soon to share their experiences with you.

If you haven't done so already, do be sure to talk things through with your medical team and/or breast cancer nurse if you were assigned one as they will be in the best position to advise and help you work through the pros and cons of both options.

We also have a team of cancer nurses you can discuss this with on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to support you at this time.

I hope you're able to figure out what to do soon and wish you all the best with your surgery when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
