Malignant melanoma and persistent cough

Hi,

So my partner has recently been diagnosed with stage 1b malignant melanoma and is going for a wle next week. 
Of further concern to me is the fact that he has had a daft cough which has being going on for some weeks now. He isn’t concerned about it however I am. I am already a widow to cancer (adenocarcinoma). He thinks I’m over reacting. My question is, am I? How likely is it that stage 1b MM could in some way be linked to something more sinister? Could the lungs have metastasised to the skin or vice versa? 
This is troubling me…….

    Hello Jo, 

    It is normal to be worried for those we love especially as you have already been very much affected by cancer in the past. It's likely the cough is unrelated to the Stage 1b malignant melanoma but it would not hurt to get in touch with his medical team when you see them next week for the WLE. Make sure you mention this cough to them, that it has been going on for weeks and be honest about your concerns. I am sure they will be able to reassure you and explain things to you fully. If he hasn't seen his GP for his ongoing cough,  I think it would be worth making an appointment too so that they can look into it and sort it out as it must be uncomfortable for him to have to deal with this ongoing cough.

    Hi Jo,

    I agree with Lucie's advice. No, you are not over reacting - you are being proactive. Make sure your partner mentions the cough at his appointment as they may probably arrange a scan, just to check his lungs. Melanoma can spread internally from the skin to lymph nodes or beyond so they need to check it's not connected. 97% of Stage 1b patients do not experience a spread internally so the odds are good that it's not connected but better to be safe tan sorry.
