Esophageal Cancer diagnosis

Hi

After having a number of procedures since my CT scan in January, my latest gastroscopy done on 15th May shows in lower oesophagus a tumour, probably malignant 8 biopsy taken for histology to confirm.  Awaiting results and Outpatients follow up. Any advice please. What sort of questions should I be asking at the Outpatients appointment.

Thank you

JWK

  • Hello JWK,

I am so sorry to hear that your latest gastroscopy shows an oesophageal tumour and that it is probably malignant. It's bound to be a really stressful time for you as you are waiting for a biopsy to be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

It's a good idea to think ahead of the sorts of questions you would like to ask at the outpatients appointment and make sure you write these down so that you do not forget. We have detailed information on our website on oesophageal cancer and reading this information may be useful and help you come up with possible questions you might want to ask. These can range from questions about your treatment plan for example. I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have dealt with an oesophageal cancer diagnosis and that they will come along and share their experience with you. They may have some good suggestions for you as to the the kinds of questions you could ask at your appointment based on their personal experiences. I remember welcoming  to the forum recently whose husband had just been diagnosed so have a look at her oesophageal cancer thread and the uplifting replies you will see there and don't hesitate to respond too if you would like to do so.

Our nurse team is also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to pick their brains on how to best prepare for your appointment - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. I am sure that they will have some great suggestions for you to help you feel ready for your outpatients appointment.

Waiting for results and definite answers is by no means easy and I thought I would also share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news. I hope that you will find out more soon about what your treatment plan might be. Keep us updated if you get a chance on how things progress for you.

    Best wishes,
