How can I support my mum

We have received the news that my mum has only a few months left, she is 92 , diagnosed with Sebaceous Carcinoma, and also has Alzheimer’s… I’m lost as to how to help , I remember all what’s being said, but she doesn’t, I repeat it over and over, she wants to understandably know

  • Hello Wendy-Toby

I'm very sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that as well as the cancer she is living with Alzheimers. It's naturally a very difficult time for you and I hope that you are being well supported in caring for your Mum by family, friends, and healthcare professionals.

There's some helpful information on the Macmillan website about supporting someone with cancer and dementia as well as information available on the Dementia UK and Alzheimer's Society websites. The Alzheimer's Society also has a specific support forum for people who are caring for a person with dementia and cancer that you may want to look at.

If it would help to talk with one of our nurses about how you're feeling and the concerns you have about the best way to support your Mum, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can.

I hope that some of these links help Wendy. It's clear from your post that you love your Mum and want to do the best that you can for her.

    Best wishes,
