Inverted nipple

My son is 14 months old. Last Saturday he woke in the morning with a really red swollen nipple on his left side. Since then the redness has gone down but his nipple has started to invert and come back out. His right hand side is completely fine. I can't feel anything behind the nipple and he doesn't complain when touched. He also doesn't try to scratch or touch it himself. He seems other wise healthy. We have been to the local GP who had a look but didn't mention if he could feel anything. He suggested it could be gynecomastia but said it would be rare at his age.He then contacted the pediatric at the local hospital who advised him to start a course of antibiotics and if no improvement they would see him. I'm really concerned this is breast cancer or pagets disease of the nipple. Thought I would see if anyone could give some input if they have experienced this or seen something similar before. Thank you for any response

  • Hello Jortay

I'm sorry to hear that you have some health concerns regarding your little boy at the moment. It's understandable that you are feeling anxious.

Many people turn to the internet when they have health concerns and we know that what often happens is that people are left feeling even more worried and still with no firm diagnosis. Please try to avoid searching for answers if you can.

It's good to hear that you've already seen the GP and they didn't have any immediate concerns. Hopefully, the antibiotics will improve things but it's reassuring to hear that the paediatric team will see your son if things don't settle.

If it would help to chat things through with one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
