Newbie. Found a lesion on my back.

As my user name says - I'm a bit scared and all of this is very new to me.

Last Thursday I found a lesion on my back. It looks suspicious to me and my husband says it has changed. I couldn't get an appointment to see my GP before the weekend and I am seeing her tomorrow. I'm worried that it is a malignant melanoma?

Are changing moles ever non cancerous?

  • You are doing the right thing getting your gp to check your mole, if you see any changes, they always need to be checked.  I have had 6 moles removed in the past at various times and none of them have turned out to be cancer.  So yes, lots turn out to be ok.  Dont worry if the gp refers you to dermatology for them to check it, and try not to worry if it is on the 2 week cancer pathway.  This does NOT mean that they definately think its cancer, more a case that they want to rule it out.

Good luck, i hope that it turns out to be ok.

  • Hi,

It's good that you are getting it checked out. Your GP may be happy it looks fine but if you are referred to dermatology, please know that 75% of referrals are not melanoma. Many are benign whilst some are dysplastic (also known as atypical of precancerous). Hopefully your will be fine but don't panic as you will be in good hands. Since my first mole was melanoma I've had 7 others removed - all were benign! Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
