Georgia - husband struggling after first round of chemo for prostate cancer. Has anyone else had this?

My husband has had his first dose of chemotherapy for prostrate cancer.   He has had hormone treatment and radio but this is the next step.  However he has gone from feeling ok and being able to do things to permanently asleep and feeling awful. Is this normal. He has to have another 29 sessions.   Anybody who has had this treatment and has any help please do.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Georgiamay although I'm really sorry to hear of the difficulties your husband is having after his first round of chemo.

Extreme tiredness (fatigue) and feeling sick are common side effects of this treatment, but if you're worried, don't hesitate to get in touch with his medical team as they'll be in the best position to address your concerns and will be able to advise you on how to manage this.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will be along soon to share their experiences and advice, but if you or your husband would like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you Georgiamay and really hope your husband starts feeling better soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hiya Georgiamay, and first of all, so sorry that you and your husband are going through this.  I had chemo 3 years ago and I can definitely relate to the chronic tiredness.  The chemo itself wasn't that bad......or certainly nowhere near as bad as I imagined it would be.  However, after each session I would get home and sleep for HOURS.  After the first four sessions I had awful leg pains, and I was given morphine for this.  If your husband is experiencing pain, perhaps he could mention it to his medical team?  It used to take me about a day to recover from each session. Hope that was some help to you, sending my best wishes to both of you, xx

  • Thanks you for replying.      He is now in hospital as he has picked  up an infection.     He is better today but I think we underestimated the potency of,this, chemo, drug.  Thanks for your best wishes which are reciprocated xx

  • Thank you  my husband is now in hospital as his temperature rose to 39.   His white blood cell count fell to 0  he is getting better but I am worried that this will happen every time.   He went from being able to what he wanted to being very poorly in the space of a few days only after 1 session.  Is this usual because it is extremely scary.   Thanks for thinking of us but I am beginning to think the treatment is worse than the illness or am I over reacting.

  • Sending my best wishes, this is such a scary time. Which chemo is your husband having?
