Hello, I have recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

I’m a newbie. I have recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

i had my first chemo on Tuesday and I’m struggling. I feel really rotten and not sure that I could carry on with this.

is it normal to feel like this?

  • Hello Helen_M

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It's understandably a difficult time for you especially as you've just last week had your first chemotherapy treatment.

I know that many of the members here will understand the questions and concerns that come to mind whilst undergoing treatment, particularly in the dark moments when the side effects can leave you feeling very low and unwell. Hopefully, some of them will post to share their experiences and advice with you soon.

In the meantime, I'd really encourage you to talk with your care team about how you've been feeling after this first round. It may be that there are medications they can prescribe to help with some of the side effects you've been experiencing or it may be that they want to adjust things before your next round of treatment. The important thing is to talk with them so that they can help you. If you have been given a clinical nurse specialist then do give them a call or contact the unit before your next appointment.

Sometimes it can feel overwhelming when you look at a treatment plan as a whole. For now, focus on recovering from your first round of chemotherapy and getting well again ahead of your next appointment. Breaking things down into more manageable chunks and not looking too far ahead to the future can help.

I know that many members here have also found it helpful to talk with someone about how they're feeling. I hope that you have some support around you from family and friends Helen. If it would help to talk with someone not immediately connected to you, you're most welcome to chat with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that by now you're starting to feel a little better. Keep in touch Helen and let us know how you get on over the coming weeks.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
