Positive fit test

I recently had a fit test and sent it away with no worries. My last one was fine. I'm fit, healthy, no signs of anything wrong so when I got letter back saying I had blood in sample and to go for colonoscopy, it completely freaked me out.

I'm so nervous and finding it really hard to cope. Had health anxiety for a while now, due to my sister dying and I'm trying to be rational but instead of thinking it's crazy, I'm having terrible thoughts.

Please someone help me.

  • You will know more when you have a colonoscopy it could be nothing, have you  noticed any blood or mucus in your stools  ?
because it was the only symptom i had , other than that i was as fit as a fiddle never felt better, could have easily dismissed it as nothing to worry about

  • Hi. Going through the same thing with my husband at the moment. Positive FIT test after.rectal bleed. Referred for urgent  colonoscopy via the 2 week cancer pathway. Terrified is an understatement so I completely understand how you're feeling. From what I have been reading, only 1 in every 10 colonoscopies find cancer. There are also so many other things it could be. It's hard to think positive though when there is a possibility of cancer.  They just have to refer you to be on the safe side. Try not to overthink things. Easier said than done I know. Have you had to have any other tests like bloods or anything? My hubby had blood tests which all came back normal apart from high cholesterol. Trust me, there are loads of people on here who are worried because of a positive FIT result so you are definitely not alone. Here if you need to chat. x

  • I've had no symptoms at all. Everything been fine which is why it was such a shock to get letter to go for colonoscopy

  • I've had no symptoms at all. Been feeling fine so I ripped letter open not expecting to see the referral for the colonoscopy. It now all feels very serious and it's freaking me right out. I would have thought I'd have some sort of symptom if something was wrong but I've googled far too much and maybe not.

  • Its good because if there was to be something they have probably got it early, i had a 5cm tumour no symptoms whatsoever other than one day i noticed some very small amounts of blood and mucus on my stools and even then it was not every time i went , it has since been removed and i am waiting for chemo next month, i even had a negative FIT test in July 2022 and just over a year later i found i had cancer , the scariest thing is i never had any real symptoms other than that felt as fit as a fiddle , had i left it thinking it was nothing to worry about then it would probably have been more serious

You're totally justified in being freaked out. I've done nothing but cry and have panic attacks since my husband was told about his FIT result. He was told to make an appointment with his GP and she told him his result face to face. He seems to be taking it all in his stride though he is worried about the procedure. I'm sure that the colonoscopy will provide more information for you and hopefully put your mind ar ease x

  • What was your husband FIT score ? The colonoscopy should tell him more , has he got any symptoms ?

  • Gordgrc. It's so scary how you can have no symptoms and then get diagnosed with cancer anyway. I've done nothing but read about cancer symptoms for the last month now and apart from the constipation ( this has stopped now) and the rectal bleeding whichh he noticed for two days but has had none at all since, he is absolutely fine. I know it's also routine for GPs to refer you for further investigation if you meet certain criteria for 2 week referrals. Really want tomorrow over and done with and to come home with positive news.

I've seen some of your other comments and posts on here since joining. I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and recent surgery. How are you coping?

  • Gordgrc. Husband's FIT score was >90. In his GP notes it uses the words 'strongly positive.

  • i have found that the NHS was very Quick if it is cancer , my FIT score was 168 , i have had my cancer removed now i have a temporary stoma i start chemo next month, its normal to think the worst, it wasn’t until i had a colonoscopy that the reality of the situation actually sunk in , they tell you there and then what they have or have not found, but my experience of the NHS has been very good, i saw my GP he gave me a FIT test , then i saw a consultant then a colonoscopy then surgeon and next a  CT scan which showed it hadn’t spread, then an operation , the surgery and surgeons were excellent it was a long operation buy key hole, i was expecting to be in pain after the operation but nothing no pain whatsoever never had any pain from the operation, i am now waiting for chemotherapy which i am not looking forward to
