Hi, from Sale, Trafford - worried about husband's ongoing bleeding

I am 62 years old and my husband is 66 in June.  The reason I have joined this chat is to hopefully get some advice on next steps as I am worried about my husband.  He has been bleeding from the behind for a number of years, dark red blood at first, now it is black and jelly like.  He has had numerous colonoscopies over the years and each time they say it is piles.  He has pain in his stomach when this happens and feels really weak with the blood loss.  He can’t take iron tablets as his constipation is also terrible due to the amount of painkillers he takes for chronic nerve pain. We have been asking the doctor if he can have the camera capsule that you swallow which can check the part of the bowel that the colonoscopy can’t reach but we’re told we can’t.  Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

  • Hello McGuire,

I am sorry to hear about your husband's ongoing bleeding - you did well to get this checked as rectal bleeding can be distressing but it's reassuring that the colonoscopies have only flagged piles. It may be worth talking to your doctor about his constipation to see if there is anything he could take to help as dealing with the constipation may also help with the piles issues. I can understand why you feel you would like for the part of the bowel the colonoscopy can't reach to be checked but it seems like the doctor doesn't feel this is necessary - perhaps it might be worth for complete peace of mind seeking a second opinion on this. Do mention as well that the bleeding is making him feel weak and that you are as a result concerned and would like a solution to this issue.

I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have experienced something similar. Keeping everything crossed that you get some good medical advice when you speak to the doctor and that your husband's bleeding and ongoing issues get sorted.

    Best wishes,
