HPV positive for 9 years

I had a procedure to remove abnormal cells over 20 years ago & thankfully the abnormal cells have not returned. However, I've tested positive for HPV high risk for the last 9 years. Will it ever leave my system or am I now stuck with it & praying it doesn't turn cancerous. All info online says is it should leave your system in 2 years, there's really not a lot of info about it. Other than, be tested once a year whilst you are HPV positive. I'm so worried about it, especially as I had abnormal cells removed over 20 years ago.

  • Hi Bitz,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand your concerns and that you are looking for some more information about this.

You may find it helpful to speak to one of our nurses - if you'd like to do this, you can either post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum, or you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5. Hopefully it will help to talk things through with someone. You can of course also speak to your doctor for further understanding.

    Wishing you all the best,
