Newly diagnosed- breast cancer

Hello everyone

I was diagnosed on Thursday. I'm still coming to terms with this and trying to get my head around it all.

It's classed as a small cancer and I have the option of registering for the SMALL trial, although I realise its randomised so may.not be chosen.

I just wondered if anyone on here is part of this trial? And how it's going for them?

I'm due to receive a call tomorrow morning to discuss it further/give them my decision.

Thanks for Reading xx

  • Hello Lynne and welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry to hear you've been diagnosed with breast cancer.

As you said, a cancer diagnosis can be a lot to get your head around and can bring so many thoughts and feelings, but I'm glad you've joined us as a lot of our members have also received this diagnosis, so you are not alone.

I'm sorry no-one was able to get back to you before you had your phone call about the SMALL trial, but I hope the conversation went well and you were able to get all the information you needed to decide what to do.

I'm not sure if anyone on the forum is on this trial at the moment, but if they are I'm sure they will share their experiences and advice with you soon. If you have any further questions about this or your diagnosis, then do give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

Do keep posting if you find it helps Lynne as we'll be here to listen and will support you every step of the way.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Lynne,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am not a doctor and have only read about this trial. From what I can gather, only people with very small, early stage cancers are suitable for this trial. Your cancer also needs to be responsive to hormone therapy and you must only have a single lump. The reason for the trial seems to be to see if removing the tumour by suction is as effective as conventional surgery. There is a belief by some surgeons that breast surgery is too drastic for these small cancers and that this would be a less invasive way of treating them.

I hope that your phone call went well yesterday and that you were able to reach a decision. I am sure that this treatment wouldn't be offered, unless the surgeons felt that this might well be a better option in the long term.

Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
