Worried

Hi. I have today been told my FIT test came back at 15 and now have to go for a camera.

I have suffered with stomach cramps and constipation with the odd spotting off blood.

I have a family history off bowl cancer from my dad's side but due to being in care I don't know the full history.

I'm scared and worried.

  • Hello W.D and welcome to Cancer Chat.

When youre worried about cancer, it can be natural to think the worst, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. You'll only know more from your doctor, so I hope your next test goes ok and don't be afraid to ask questions. It's important that you are informed and understand what's going on. We also have information on testing for bowel cancer on our website, which I hope will be helpful.

    Best wishes,

  • 15 is only slightly above the cut-off for positive and many, many things can cause it. It isn't a test for cancer, just a test as to whether or not there is blood in your stool and given that you saw some spotting of blood, it doesn't really tell you anything you didn't already know.

Many things can cuase the symptoms you mention and the odds are strongly that it will turn out to be something far less serious than cancer. The constipation alone could cause the bleeding.

I know it is worrying though, because there is always the possibility that it could turn out to be the worst case scenario. It probably won't though.

  • Hi Margaret thanks for you reply.

The reason I'm worrying is my birth father had bowl cancer and because I was fostered I don't have any other information.

Thank you for the reinsurance words. X
