Unsure of my diagnosis and confused by information given

Hello Everyone,

I was diagnosed in May 23, following a MRI with contrast..(no biopsy done) with two brain tumours. One I was told is a sub ependymoma, which is supposed to be benign and the other a Glioma. I have had three monthly scans up until 3rd February 24. I’m now going to have six monthly scans. I initially went to hospital to establish the cause of perhearal Neurophy symptoms and spondylolisthesis (severe back pain)

I’ve been told by my Neuro Surgeon my tumours are accidental findings and they leave sub ependymoma well alone. I’m in the dark as to whether the Glioma is cancerous. I was told it’s 5 Mm in size. I don’t know if that means it not yet at a size where it’s ca passed as cancerous!  I’m also  it’s to dangerous and risky to perform a biopsy, or to operate, which I’m not happy about , as it seems they have given up on me without trying any form of treatment. I have queried whether it to do with my age(65) or my health issues, (Hypertension, sleep apnoea) I was told no.

I have no idea at this stage whether I have cancer, where my life is heading , what actions to take. If I should try immunotherapy, which is very costly, or if I should join trial?? I’m stress, worried, anxious and scared. What adds to my frustration I have very little support from my husband, as he prefers not to talk issues through.

is there anyone out there who has the same medical condition, who are just under careful surveillance, or observation by the medical profession?

  • Hi Joy.EB,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. This sounds like a lot to deal with and especially with the confusion around the diagnosis and potential next steps. I'm also sorry to hear you're not getting too much support around you.

It's difficult to advise on this as really it is the doctor or medical team involved in the care who can best do this. I'm not sure when your next appointment is, but it may help to write down any and all questions you have and to ask these. It's important that you can get the information you need, and the understanding about what happens next.

You are also welcome to speak to one of our nurses if you would like to. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5 - or you can post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum.

We are always here for support on the forum if you need it, and I hope that it can be helpful for you.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
