Cheffiejean - looking for support. 74 year old partner diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Hi I'm new here so hello everybody. My 74yr old partner has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukeimia and was hoping to start chemo immediately but has just been told this will not be possible as he has an infection that hasn't responded to treatment. We are left absolutely crushed...all that can be done is regular blood transfusions and then its a matter of time. This has all happened over about the last 4 weeks so some support would be appreciated.

  • Welcome to the forum, Cheffiejean.

I'm sorry to hear about your partner's recent diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). It's understandable to feel devastated by this news, especially with the unexpected setback of the infection.

During this challenging time, try to prioritise self care and lean on your support network for emotional support. There's also this page from our website with ideas on how to support someone you love with cancer in case you feel like having a read. Hopefully other Cancer Chat members who have been through a similar experience caring for their loved ones with cancer will be here shortly to offer advice and support, as chatting with those who can relate does seem to help.

Stay strong, Cheffiejean and please try to remember to take care of yourself as well.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
